Brief History
.
Safina which means “Noah’s ark” in Kiswahili was launched in May 1995 by Hon Paul Muite, a senior counsel, opposition activist and MP for Kikuyu and Dr. Richard Leakey, a well known conservationist, a Kenyan of British descent. The party was denied official registration by the government for more than two years due to its perceived popularity and strong links to the donor community. But it was finally officially registered by the Kenyan government in November 1997, just 33 days to the 1997 General Elections. Safina went ahead and participated in the elections getting six members of parliament and several councillors. In the 2002 General elections the party got 2 members of parliament and several councillors. In the just concluded 2007 General Elections Safina was ranked the fifth largest political party in Kenya. Behind ODM, PNU, ODM Kenya, and KANU. We managed to get 5 MPs and over sixty councillors represented in various local authorities spread out in Kenya.

Objectives
.

  • Reconstruction of the Economy: A ravaged infrastructure, a poor investment climate, wrong priorities and inequitable distribution of wealth have been the hallmarks of economic governance in the last 40 years. Safina would like to see this reversed urgently through proper allocation of resources, encouraging private enterprise, affirmative action and better management of resources.
  • Constitutional reforms: Safina has vigorously pursued constitutional reforms since its launch. The party is committed to participatory democracy, strong institutions, checks and balances, individual and collective freedoms and an enabling environment for economic progress, and would like to see these entrenched in a new constitution as soon as practicable.
  • Elimination of corruption: This has been a key deterrent to progress. Safina sees the root causes of corruption as the culture of tolerance (even tacit encouragement) of corruption, poverty, institutional weaknesses and poor enforcement of the law. The party will tackle corruption by punishing the culprits without exception, by strengthening institutions that fight corruption and synchronizing their efforts, through poverty eradication programmes and by entrenching a “hard work pays” culture in the country.
  • Education: The party is committed to free primary education of good quality. It also supports affordable secondary and tertiary education through minimization of fees, giving of bursaries and loans to deserving students and subsidization where possible.
  • Health: The party would like to see affordable healthcare for all, with charges being linked to ability to pay. Availability of health care, drugs and other medical facilities close to the people is a priority. Emphasis will be given to preventive programmes, especially for HIV/AIDS, malaria and malnutrition-caused diseases. Maternal health care will also be given attention.
  • Social Security: The party believes in an all inclusive social security. People in informal employment have previously been excluded form social security schemes, yet they constitute the vast majority of Kenya’s workers. The management of social security investments will be vastly improved, while maximizing the benefits that go directly to the contributors.
